Grayson is the college man, who Bess falls in "Love" with. But, after he takes her out on a picnic, and tries to kiss her against her will, she realizes what a pompus, idiotic, low-life, jerk, (you get the point) he is. Thank-goodness he returns to college, and is never heard of again . . .
He didn't apologize, and that, in my book was very-very, WRONG! He is NOT a nice man!
