Editor's Note:

Seeing as it took so long for me to get these out, it should come as no surprise that some of the staff writers have become busy with other things, and would no longer like to write for the newsletter. I can understand their need to leave (after all, this is completely voluntary), but this leaves me in a bit of a bind.

I need more help with the newsletter. If you are willing to write episode reviews, book reviews, or articles of any kind (I do have a couple new ideas for future newsletters), please write to me with "Little Men: Newsletter" in the subject. I am completely open to new ideas. :)

These last two newsletters have come out late, and it's not fair to the writers who have spent so much time writing columns, and getting them to me when I ask. So, I am going to do my best to get these newsletters out on time every other month (even if I do it without an official update for my page). Any help you give would be much appreciated.

So, If you would like to help write colums, or if you have any ideas for future newsletters, please e-mail me at littlemenfan@excite.com

I hope that you will enjoy this newsletter, and all the newsletters to come. Until next time,

"Dazed and Confused"
Movie review: by: Sara

It was s and bell bottoms, polyester and puka shells, macrame and mood rings. We rocked and rolled, were jaded and innocent, but most of all, we were Dazed and Confused. With hilarious and touching honesty, this critically acclaimed comedy explores the last day of school - and one rowdy nite - in the lives of a group of high school students in late May, 1976.

The above is taken from my DVD "Dazed and Confused". I feel this is the best way to introduced this movie. (If I did it in my own words it would fill an few hundred pages.)

"Dazed and Confused" is an very fast paced movie. You see Michelle Rene Thomas (she went by Burke in the movie) as an young teenager. People who only see Michelle Rene Thomas in her role as Jo Bhare in "Little Men" will be shocked watching her in "Dazed and Confused."

"Dazed and Confused" is like "American Garriffte" they show an bang of new talent all in one fast paced movie. They don't really take the time for you to get to know the characters they just want to show the new faces.

I highly recommend watching "Dazed and Confused". You can find it on VHS and DVD at your local video store.

Nat's Corner -
Review and Summary by: Arrow

There is more to writing a song fiction than just picking a song and inserting its phrases in-between paragraphs. A song fiction (better known as a songfic), takes a lot more than an ordinary fanfiction does. It requires the will to write, the want to express and the need to share.

A songfic, a well-written songfic that is, can express the feelings of the song, the topic or both. Being a review column I won't go into to much detail of ‘How to write a songfic' but start on this month's fic, which ironically happens to be a songfic.

Presenting to you, a songfic written by Macayla Jo Adams; One of the very few ones based on Little Men. The fic was amazing. The feelings were well thought out and beautifully expressed. The timing is just right; the continuity is surprisingly in tune. All in all you'll enjoy reading this. There's not much you can really say about a Songfic, for opinions vary when it comes to this. In fact, I'll let you be the judge and decide weather you like it or not: Here goes:

Summary: Nick mulls over his actions over the past weeks prior to the Father-Son Ski Race at the Winter Festival.

The Cowboy in Me
By: Macayla Jo Adams

Author's Note: Have you ever wondered in the episode "Father Figure" what went through Nick's head that caused him to show up at the Winter Festival after all? I am completely entranced with the song "The Cowboy in Me" right now, so the song inspired me to ponder what went through Nick's head that morning before he showed up next to Nat. I suggest downloading the song and listening to it while you read the story.

I don't know why I act the way I do
Like I ain't got a single thing to lose
Sometimes I'm my own worst enemy
I guess that's just the cowboy in me

Nick sat soberly in the chair in his room with his steel blue eyes fixed on the wall in front of him. His jaw firmly set, the frustration behind his eyes was apparent. How could he have been so foolish? Teaching Nat how to fight? Where had that brilliant idea come from? Seeing Nat wrapped up in bandages had frightened him to the marrow. Why had be been so foolish?

Footsteps softly thudded in the barn as Jo's voice questioningly filled the room. "Nick?"

In his room, Nick quietly slipped from his chair to hide behind the door she would open from inside the barn. The last thing he could handle was facing her again.

Then you're only hurting them more by staying, she said the night before when she came to lecture him yet again about his mistakes.

"Nick?" she called again.

He sighed with relief when she didn't crack open his bedroom door. After he heard her footsteps fade into the yard, he crossed the room and plopped back down into the chair. Wearily, he raked his fingers through his hair. Things made perfect sense a few weeks earlier. Nat needed someone to teach him how to defend himself. What possible harm could come from teaching the boy a few techniques and moves so he could fend for himself in a fight? Nat came to him desperate and angry, tired of always having Dan stand up for him. It made perfect sense to teach Nat how to swing a few punches. There was nothing to lose.

Except Nat.

When Dr. Pierce allowed them to bring Nat home to recuperate, Nick could barely muster the courage to set foot inside the room. He felt awkward and ashamed. For the first time in years, the familiar feeling of self hatred crept over him like a guile predator waiting to devour what little was left of him. Sitting there at Nat's beside with "Moby Dick" in his hands, he felt the pain he tried so hard to bury resurface.

The memories were too agonizing. Nick blinked back the tears in his eyes as he rose from the chair and began to pace his room. Outside he could hear the children gathering around the wagon to leave for town. The Winter Festival would begin in less than an hour. Above the din, he could hear Emil and Dan arrogantly arguing over who would win the ski race. Peering out the window, Nick saw Nat asking Jo a question. The look on his face after she answered slit Nick's heart. He knew Nat was asking for him.

I got a life that most would love to have
But sometimes I still wake up fightin' mad
At where this road I'm headin' down might lead

They look up to you. They hang on your every word, watch your every move, trying to be like you.

Nick never asked for the boys to look up to him, but they did. Jo was right. They did watch his every move. They clamored to his side to help with chores and begged for stories about his life at sea. If only they knew the battle that raged within him from time to time. If only they knew that some days when they pestered him relentlessly, all he wanted to do was hammer their mouths shut and stalk into the woods with Max. At least the dog couldn't talk. At least the dog didn't idolize him and emulate his every action. There were no expectations from Max. Not like the boys'. Not like Jo's.

Some days, he wished he hadn't left the ship back at Thanksgiving. Plumfield could have gotten along without him just fine. Jo would have hired a new caretaker, and Nat never would have gotten into that stupid fight with Cade. Staying here made things too complicated. Nick couldn't keep things straight anymore. What did he want out of life now? Adventure and danger fed his soul for so many years that plugging along at Plumfield sometimes seemed like the most mundane life possible. And yet he stayed on, month after month, taking care of the same chores day after day.

The urge to run the restlessness
The heart of stone I sometimes get
The things I've done for foolish pride
The me that's never satisfied
The face that's in the mirror
when I don't like what I see
I guess that's just the cowboy in me

Crossing the room again, he shoved his hands in his coat pockets and flung open the door. The snow crunched loudly beneath his boots as he marched across the yard to the front porch. He opened the front door and slipped inside. He felt out of place in the fancy entry hallway. Black and white marble tile stretched in all directions at his feet. The rich wall coverings and tapestries made his clothing look shoddy and worn. Why did he think he could ever fit in here? He was too different, too coarse and unrefined. This house was for people who longed to learn from books. The children who tread the carpet thin were eager, willing to jump at any opportunity. Their hearts were filled with dreams as limitless as the heavens. How could he be of any use to them? He could barely read and could hardly scratch his name on a tablet. Nick Riley working at a school made about as much sense as a wild horse in a crowded ballroom.

Nick turned to his right and looked at his reflection in the mirror hanging above the small fireplace in the entry hallway. Staring at the lines of his face, he saw the tension of his jaw. "You been real stupid lately, you know?" he chided his reflection. His voice bounced in the hollow room, causing it to expand and fill the downstairs. The sound permeated him with despondence. All he had was the mirror staring back at him. And all the mirror could do was throw back into his face whatever repulsiveness he possessed. "Why do ya even bother?" he asked himself. He slammed his hands down on the mantle and exhaled an angry breath. Thoughts swirling, he refused to look at his reflection again.

A few moments later, he lifted his head and turned away from the mirror to head back to the barn. The house offered no comfort. He happened to glance down at the round table on his way to the door and noticed a piece of paper with his name scrawled across it. Picking it up, he glanced around the hallway once more before he opened it.

Nick,
I hope I wasn't able to find you before we left because you were busy with chores. Please, come to the festival if you can make it. The children want you to be there. I want you to be there.
-Jo

Girl, I know there's times you must have thought
There ain't a line you've drawn I haven't crossed
But you set your mind to see this love on through
I guess that's just the cowboy in you

Nick stared at Jo's words as a twinge of hope managed to clear a path through the rubble of his misery. She wanted him to be there with her and the children. Despite everything that had happened she still wanted him to be a part of their lives. Before the restlessness could stifle the sliver of optimism, he bolted out the front door and toward the barn to saddle his horse. The ride into town took no time at all. He forced his horse to gallop the entire way, focused solely on arriving at the Winter Festival before the ski race commenced. The festival officials had roped off an area for the horses on the north side of town, so he dismounted and tethered his horse before walking around the side of the general store to cross town. When he arrived at the designated place for the audience, he searched for Jo and the children. Finding them was very easy, considering that Nat was wrapped up in half a dozen blankets and scarves. He could barely see the contestants in the race warming up in the snow-covered street. Nick paused for a moment to look at the boy smiling and laughing with his friends. Regardless of what Nat had done, Nat had not only recovered, but also grown. Nick realized that he could make mistakes. Drowning in them was what was dangerous.

With his mind set on making things right for good, Nick strode through the crowd and stopped behind Nat. "Mind if I join you?"

Nat turned to look up at Nick and beamed. "Nick!" he exclaimed as Nick said down next to him on the bench. "You're here!"

Nick looked past Nat straight into Jo's beaming eyes. "I wouldn't've missed it for the world."

The end.

"Dear Jo"

Dear Jo:
Someone wants to adopt me. I should be happy but I'm not. You see I don't remember my last name. It's bad enough I don't remember my parents but NOT to remember my last name is in an way worst. If I allow myself to be adopted and take the last name than I feel I'm not honoring my real parents.
~ Heartbroken and no last name

Dear: Heartbroken and no last name
You have to pray about this. Ask God to take your life in his hands and to help you deal with not knowing your last name for the time being. Ask him to help you find out when the time is right. For taking the adopted parents last name; you don't have too. You can just be in an family legally so no one can take you away.

Note From Rachel: I somehow managed to misplace some of the answers to questions that have been sent in. I still have the questions though, and I will send them to Jo again for her reply, and they will be in future newsletters. Sorry for the delay.
