Things That Happened

I got to thinking the other day (a bad habit, I know) and I was wondering what actually happened during the years of Little Men. (1870-1872 is what I have right now, with the possibility of more years if you want them.) So here is what I found:

1870

American Industrialist John D. Rockefeller founds the Standard Oil Company
The city of Miami was founded in Florida
The U.S. Weather Bureau was founded.
Rome Became The Capital of The Kingdom Of Italy

1871

The Great Chicago Fire (1/3 of the city was destroyed)
American explorer Henry Morton Stanley finds Dr. Livingston in central Africa.
P.T. Barnum launched a traveling circus, museum, and menagerie.
British Columbia joins the Dominion of Canada.

1872

The first national park, Yellowstone National Park, is created.
American artist James McNeill Whistler paints the Portrait of the Artist's Mother
The Modoc War Begins In Oregon
Monet paints Impression: Sunrise; the term impressionism is derived from the title
Ulysses S. Grant defeated Horace Greely to win a second term as president.
